Greetings! We have some fantastic news: The Independent is one of 36 newsrooms across the state that will be welcoming a new California Local News Fellow next month.
Nova Blanco-Rico will join our staff for two years, covering health and health care issues in the Coachella Valley—in other words, he will be writing stories that affect every single person who calls the desert home.
Nova earned his master’s degree in journalism from USC Annenberg. He previously worked as an associate producer at KTLA 5 and as a reporter at The Press-Enterprise, covering local politics and community news. He has also written for the LAist, Los Angeles Magazine, The LA Local and CALÓ News. He’s passionate about photography, and he says he can typically be found outside with his Sony camera taking pictures of nature.
We can’t wait for you to meet Nova when he arrives at the Independent on Sept. 8! But before Nova joins us, we need your help.
The California Local News Fellowship program is mostly paid for by the state—but the Independent has to pay a portion of Nova’s salary, buy him a laptop, reimburse his expenses, and so on.
More good news: The Coachella Valley Journalism Foundation has generously agreed to chip in $7,000 toward those expenses—about half of the funds we’ll need for all of these extra costs.
Your donation will help us cover the other half—and given we’re in the midst of the slower summer months right now, we need all the reader help we can get! No amount is too small to make an impact.
